Lena was born October 12, 1938 to John and Anna Rempel in Winkler, Manitoba. She was the youngest with 2 older brothers and one sister. She accepted Jesus as her Saviour at a revival meeting when she was 7 and experienced the peace and joy that only comes from Jesus!

Lena met John at Winkler Bible School and they got married on October 18, 1958. They farmed and raised 7 children just outside of Culross, Manitoba. Lena had a passion for music, for flowers and for hospitality and she used these passions to worship and serve God in the Elm Creek MB Church and later on at Crossroads MB Church.

In 1992 John and Lena sold the farm to a family friend and for the next 2 years moved to Hutchinson, Kansas where John volunteered repairing homes for the poor and Lena volunteered at a nursing home and at a MCC Thrift Store. These two years were a real highlight for them. They grew in their love for Jesus and for sharing the gospel with anyone they met.

When they moved back to Winnipeg, Lena continued working for Home Care which she had done for the last 6 years in Elm Creek. She was a good listener to her clients and often prayed with them if they wanted her to. She volunteered at Riverview Health Centre by playing music and leading a sing-a-long time once a week. She did this for over 12 years.

John and Lena became involved at Crossroads MB Church where Lena continued to play the piano for as long as she could. They invited many people to their home for Sunday lunch. Lena shared the love of Jesus with people she worked with as well as those who needed extra support from their church. She had a quiet grace that people felt comfortable with.

She also volunteered with the MCC Thrift Store managing the volunteer schedule, pricing, and working the till. Together with John, they started cutting squares and sewing blankets for MCC. Over the years they sewed hundreds of blankets for those who were in crisis.

John and Lena moved to Concordia Village on August 15, 2015 where they lived together for 3 years. They celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary there in 2018 with their family. Shortly after, in May, Lena’s dementia made living at home too difficult and she was moved to Donwood Manor Personal Care Home. This transition was difficult for her, and John and all of the family but she showed grace and love right to the very end. She especially enjoyed the music activities which they provided and joyfully sang along. It was time for Mom to be blessed by others sharing music with her.

We, her children are so incredibly thankful and inspired by Dad who has never complained about the changes in his life. He has served Mom with deep love and with humility. He has led mom through them all, always walking with her, hand in hand.
