JOHN REGEHR (1925-2019)

We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John Regehr at the age of 93.

He was predeceased by his wife Mary, in 2014, his parents, two sisters and a brother.

He is survived by one sister, Martha, and two brothers, Albert and Henry, brother-in-law, Hermann Unger, nieces and nephews.

John grew up in Herbert, Saskatchewan, eventually settling in Manitoba where he met and married Mary Unger. It was a marriage of 65 years.

John was a teacher, first in West Kildonan, then at MBCI and finally at Concord College, where he taught from 1968-1995. He received his Doctorate in Practical Theology from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He also served as pastor and counsellor throughout his life.

John lived his life immersed in the Love and Presence of God, and all he did grew out of that. Through his many sermons, hymns, poetry, and the countless hours counselling, mentoring and companioning, he has impacted generations of students, colleagues, parishioners, and fellow-travellers. He was accepting, affirming, believing the best in others, seeing people for who they are. He continued to write and extended his welcome to all who visited him until the very end. But his life’s work was finished, and he was ready to go home. Love, wisdom, and absolute fidelity to Truth is the legacy he leaves us all.

To his family he said, ’I take your love with me - I leave my love with you’. These would also be his words for all who knew him - and even those who didn’t.

John is mourned by his family: Rennie (Jenny), Lorie (Murray Bolton), Mark, Jenny (Marty Cartman), nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral took place Friday, November 15 at 11:00 a.m. at McIvor Avenue Mennonite Brethren Church.
