Ivan Joseph LeBlanc - Oct 3, 2015 at Victoria Inn, Embassy Room

Obituary: After a brief courageous battle with cancer, Ivan passed into Peace, his beloved wife Connie, at his side.

Ivan was born in Carleton Sur Mer in the Gaspe, Quebec, son of Alexandre & Rose Alba LeBlanc. He leaves Connie his loving wife of 55 years and nine surviving brothers and sisters and their families scattered throughout Quebec and Ontario to mourn his passing. Ivan was predeceased by his eldest sister, two brothers-in-law and his parents.

Ivan arrived in Winnipeg in the spring of 1960 and began a long and challenging career as a hydro lineman with the City Hydro Overhead Construction crew. Throughout his working years, he was an active member of CUPE Local 500 and held an Honorary Life Membership in the Electrical & Mechanical Unit.

Ivan and Connie married October 22, 1960 and gradually he adjusted to his new life & language hurdles in Manitoba and his Ukrainian in-laws. Over the years, many precious extended family relationships were developed, shared mutual joys, sorrows or merely the mutual giving or receiving support in times of need. Ivan was always genuinely interested in the well-being of his friends, neighbours, fellow workers and their families or folks at the store or passing by. Our home was open to diverse cultures from both the academic and local communities which so enriched our lives and minds. Ivan loved hosting and sharing feasts, celebrations or simply kicking back to relax with cross word puzzles or a little scotch-sampling with like-minded fans.

Among his community and assorted volunteer activities, Ivan returned to playing hockey, and later, mentoring and coaching children, thus becoming "Uncle Ivan" to the admiring kids. He was known to never hesitate giving a helping hand wherever needed, with his trademark humour or empathy. Another passion was his concern and love of wildlife and their habitat. He created the yard into a small urban sanctuary for the birds and assorted small creatures, nurturing their needs throughout the four seasons.

He looked forward to his travels to annually visit family members or dear friends from coast to coast. His dream trip of being abroad in the late 1970's was surpassed by the ultimate experience of attending the Vancouver Olympic Games a few years ago. Ivan's zest for sports had led him to becoming a collector of Olympic pins and souvenirs. While at the Games, he mingled with an assortment of celebrities, and was featured on national television and publications as a leading Olympic pin collector, "modestly" becoming known internationally as the "Winnipeg Olympic Pin Man". He served as Vice-President and was a member of the Winnipeg Pin Collectors Club for several years.

Ivan was also a proud and dedicated member of the Masonic fraternity. He belonged to several Concordant organizations serving in various capacities including Treasurer and Recorder. Among them were the Masonic Lodge, Royal Arch Masons, Cryptic Rite Masons, Knights Templar, Red Cross of Constantine and the Order of the Secret Monitor.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, October 3, 2015, 11:00 A.M., Victoria Inn, Embassy Room. Lunch will follow the service.

In lieu of floral offerings, we request consideration to donate in his Memory to the Manitoba Masonic Foundation, 420 Corydon Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, Cancer Care Manitoba, or to any humanitarian charity or animal welfare organization of your choice.

Our deepest gratitude and love goes to our families, extended families, special friends, neighbours, Masonic fraters and their Ladies, for their generous, loving support and help through the difficult times. Ivan deeply appreciated the visits, prayers, expressions of good wishes and cards. We are blessed having you in our lives and you will always be in our hearts.

We also thank the efforts of the Medical team of GH6 at the Health Science Centre for their compassionate care.

And lastly, for taking on the duties of Chaplain and adviser, a heartfelt thank you to Jack Hooper.

Rest in Peace in the arms of an Angel

Until we meet again
